Ofelia Kieck: experimental animation looks more, well, experimental "off the beaten path" and more artsy. Probably something with experimental media. It never hurts to send the college an e-mail asking. Both will require a good amount of narrative after all animation is all about telling a story.Your portfolio will determine which school branch you apply to. What's in that portfolio? Character animation sounds a little more vanilla and if you get in, you'd probably get a job working for a company. The thing is, visual art is also a lot about narrative so you're kinda sending mixed signals with your question. Cartoons and anime are made by huge teams, don't forget, but it's hard to choose a place in industry if the storytelling aspect doesn't interest you at all. I mean, when you create a character, don't you just /have/ to give them a story or a means of existence? Animation scho! ols are hard and you'll suffer regardless of whether you've got an aptitude for writing or not. Consider adding to portfolio something like demo reels of animations that you've already done. if you don't have any, then even just storyboards of an animation are better than your entire portfolio being without. I suggest applying to a program that focuses on character design, background design, or something involving the aspects that you're actually interested because there's more that goes into an animation that just animated characters....Show more
