Debora Soliani: As someone that was actually in the S.P.E.D program (As a student, and peer counselor) I think I can answer... A few of your questions.1.) Are you in an inclusive classroom or does your school still have a special education classroom?Depends on the school system your entering. And it truly depends on YOUR demeanor. I had many "S.P.E.D" classes, we actually had our own "Color Zone" almost all the classes, at the far end corner of the school, where for the ?S.P.E.D classes. Now I had a Art classes, that was "Inclusive"... Personally I hated it. though I interacted well with everyone, because I had anger-management, and a few other psycho babble. ! The other students with more serious "affections" we're mocked, and abused "Verbally" by their "teacher". I complained I did everything, but nothing was ever done. I recall times when the teacher didn't even come to class, and I had to manage 2 children with downs, and one child with (I'm sorry I don't know the name, but he had little twitchs, and he would rock back and forth, his name was Shuan). Anyways. I hated those classes. But like I said it depends on the school system, and how "advance" their S.P.E.D program is. I spent my freshman year in "Park View" where their S.P.E.D program consisted of "4" teachers. 2 of them carried teasers, and didn't teach a damn thing. (There was only 5 kids in the classroom).2.) What are the most common "afflictions" in your class?A lot of emotional disorders. Unless your going towards the "Mental disorder" realm, then it was downs...3.) How often are children with ADD and ADHD put in special education classrooms? I've never seen! a child with a minor, or mild case of ADD or ADHD in any S.P.! E.D class, usually they had other affections. (Most schools wont accept children with ADD or ADHD without being medicated, and they usually are pushed into the mainstream, but that was my school, can't speak for many others. )4.) Are you allowed to take the special needs children on field trips? If so, where do you go? If not, would you like to see a change in this?Well, my "grade" or "class" wasn't able to go on many field trips. Not because we had misbehaved, mainly because of our records. I, along with many in my class had committed certain "crimes" in our youth - related to our disorder. So we, as a rule, weren't allowed to leave school grounds... And turth be told... No one in the S.P.E.D program ever went to field trips. Other then McD's. Or something minor like that. Its to much of a risk to let children with S.P.E.D out on the world... At least thats how our administrators saw it. 5.) Are you glad you went into special education?Well as a student I didn't h! ave a choice, until my junior year, when I was allowed to go mainstream... I didn't. I think it takes a different kind of teacher to go into S.P.E.D. Some of my teachers weren't... The best. Some where verbally and mentally abusive. And those few treated us like a burden on the school system. But most teachers had a amazing personality. And I admire, and I can say I loveed (love) some of my teachers. But, I hated being the S.P.E.D program. Watching your peers fall, and just leave, was heart breaking. To hear of a friend going to jail, or ODing. Or just dropping out... It wasn't reassuring. Out of 150 kids that entered the system with me (same "class" of 05) only 50 walked. And only 65 graduated. I hope I helped. If not I'm sorry. For wasting your time....Show more
Maynard Reevers: Demicidal: That was very helpful. Thank you! =)
Soraya Coodey: I taught in Spec Ed School for 20 yrs. Worked w/all types of dissabilities. Severely retarded/mult-han! dicapped, blind/deaf, severely emotionally disturbed/learning disabled.! This was a private, state funded school on a large city campus. We had both day and residential (Mon-thurs only) students.1. School was for special education students only.2. In my last class my common was ADHD/along w/psychotic, personality disorder, pervasive developmental order, Ausperger's and even autism.3. In my school, most ADD and ADHD students were there because it was severe along w/other handicapping conditions.4. Yes we did go on trips. Museums, circus, aquarium, zoo, as long as it was tied to a part of curriculum being taught. e.g. planetarium trip during a science curriculum on space, planets, etc.5. I have mixed feelings about it It was physically and emotionally draining each and every day.6. I did it for 20 yrs. Now retired. Early retirement at age 58. Most people do retire earlier rather than later due to the stresses of the job....Show more
Jesse Pirieda: First of all congratulations, I would LOVE to finish my degree to teach SPED.1. I a! m a paraeducator. Our school has inclusion rooms. 2. There is a fairly wide range to the "afflictions"3. Sometimes that depends on other special needs.4. The only field trips are if the reg. ed. class is going. We don't get to go on many. It's been years since a field trip was approved.5. I love my job, but would be much better when/if I can finish my degree.6. Since 1995, I was a substitute then, I have been full time para for 5+ years now....Show more
Lolita Deschamp: 1.) Are you in an inclusive classroom or does your school still have a special education classroom?I teach a preschool special needs/typical children mix in a public school district.2.) What are the most common "afflictions" in your class? The disabilities in my room are commonly autism, speech/language disorders, and behavior disorders. (but any disability could qualifiy)3.) How often are children with ADD and ADHD put in special education classrooms? Well at my age level (3-5) these are not typicall! y diagnosed yet. At the school age level in my district however these c! hildren are usually in the regular classroom setting with support from a SPED teacher if needed. 4.) Are you allowed to take the special needs children on field trips? If so, where do you go? If not, would you like to see a change in this?YES! We take lots of field trips. I think it is against the law NOT to take SPED students if it is being offered to regular ed. children.5.) Are you glad you went into special education? Yes, best decision I ever made. I also have an elementary degree, but prefer special ed. 6.) How long have you been in special education? 22 years....Show more
