bmw 530 2002 114k miles maintenance?

Linwood Mccory: again, mechanically retarded.. the car has been well maintained.. basically what happened was one time his youngest son basically stole the car one time, went airborne, punctured the oil pan, oil leaked, engine burned up, was replaced. I live in austin, texas. it's pretty hot and humid here.

Shelley Stevens: Yeah that's a decent deal on said car. You can't estimate yearly averages with cars because of individual driving maintenance and repair habits. On this particular car you're probably going to eat into that 2k budget fairly quickly especially if you lay on the throttle. The real problem is actually the transmissions which are very expensive to replace or repair. What do you mean "totally rebuilt" engine. Do you mean full bottom end? If so...that doesn't happen often in a well maintained car. Another thing is where you live. I live in the desert and there's a ton of problems with those cars here, I've seen about 10 modern bmws (2007+) wit! h popped head gaskets in the last 6 months. That was across the line...mainly 3 series but a couple of 7 series and an suv in there....Show more

Tracy Huesso: These are very good cars but i would not say they are easy for DIY maintenance, especially if you are a novice. The problem with the E39 5 series is the lack of jacking points. It has the usual four, with two on each side on the sill but no more. This means that unless you have a hydraulic lift or ramps you cannot jack the car up then support it on axle stands. On top of this they are quite complicated cars so nothing on them is especially straight forward. If you have little or no experience of servicing cars then you will struggle with a 5 series. Even changing the spark plugs takes twice as long as it does on most cars.On the plus side you can get a lot of support from BMW specific forums....Show more

Virgil Menefee: I think it's a good buy if you like the car. DIY is not difficult. There are some fo! rums out think with DIY instruction on brakes, sensor replacem! ent, basic maintenance. If the coolant system has not been change then it's time. Water pump, hoses, maybe the thermostat, must chance stupid plastic radiator expansion tank, belts, tensioner, idle pulley, spark plugs, valve cover gasket, old air pump valve vacuum hose. I'm sure there are other things like transmission and differential fluid change or fuel filter, but still a good buy to me....Show more
