Should "alternative medicine" be renamed to "anti-medicine"?

Riley Migl: Matt said, "What's with the simpleton idea "if it works it's medicine"? I mean, seriously, have you people never heard of progress?"Oh, yes. That's what science does. It tests stuff....and rejects the stuff that don't work (i.e. the majority of alt.med) and builds on the stuff that does work. Alt.med isn't a new "idea". It's been around for many (in some cases thousands) of years and it's been failing high quality trials for just as long too. It's your ilk that are the "late adopters" by still clinging to the idea that it works and refusing to accept the overwhelming evidence that shows it doesn't. Conventional medicine adapts to any new evidence, alternative "medicine" just stays wrong.Edit: Er...I forgot to answer the question.....What Gary, JLI and Nate said :)...Show more

Floyd Labuda: Seeing as this isn't a realistic goal, I'd rather people became more aware of what the evidence has to say about it.

Claire Billegas: There is no doubt that some ! of the practitioners/proponents of alt med are anti-medicine. But in all fairness, some of them do accept some aspects of conventional medicine. I am not convinced that renaming it would have any effect. I think Nate's strategy of educating the public in scientific thinking and reasoning would be much more fruitful.

Stanton Valdivia: No. It should be renamed HOLISTIC MEDICINE, because it treats the whole person, rather than just suppressing symptoms the way ALLOPATHIC (conventional) medicine does.Since Pharma drugs are the 4th leading cause of death worldwide more than half of the world's population considers Allopathy to be Pseudoscientific. Faked studies, peer reviews, etc. have really done a lot to discredit the drug companies and most educated people are skeptical about using it these days....Show more

Renato Abatiell: no, leave that up to the medicine nerds/doctors..also, anti means not so not medicine wouldnt really fit. i think it should be temp-medicine.! temp stands for temporary....

Devon Kalberer: Not reall! y, as 'alternative medicine' is often the next 'medicine'.Or have I missed something and everything about medicine is known and covered, nothing left to learn. There are certainly ridiculous ideas in alternative medicine...Show more

Marcel Then: conventional medicine is the epitome of what you term, "mumbo jumbo pseudosciency crap". it's so-called science is based on fraud. this serves to get it's treatments, mostly drugs, out into the market and turning a profit. however, the lie reveals itself in time, no matter how hard they try to conceal it, often in the form of dead or seriously injured consumers of it's quackery, and the lawsuits that accompany them. nonetheless, there are lots of dullards out there who still blindly believe in it like the tooth fairy or santa claus....Show more

Jerald Florence: What's with the simpleton idea "if it works it's medicine"? I mean, seriously, have you people never heard of progress? Do you recall where physiptherapy once sa! t, and now it's one of the most critical ingredients for those recovering from injuries? In computer speak, you guys are termed late adopters, meaning you wait until all the bugs have been removed so that you're 2 or 3 versions behind. This question and the answers in agreement are a sad indictment on Western schooling and indoctrination....Show more

Nikki Sypult: Any medicine that works is simply called medicine; there really is no such thing as alternatives to that. Yes I'd definitely be happy with the term 'anti-medicine'. Consider that further to the mumbo jumbo pseudosciency crap, the alties also typically ATTACK real medicine, attack doctors, attack drugs, and attack those who support medical science in general. Just look through the answers in this section, you'll be shocked. Anti-medicine by definition.-------EDIT: @Matt, physiotherapy always showed promise and has been developed over time, like most therapies that work. They even do research. I don’t t! hink you understand alternative medicine â€" it has nothing to do with ! progress; they do little or no research, it doesn’t progress anywhere. They are stuck in cultural traditions like magic water, chakra balancing and meridian unblocking, or it’s woo woo scams like magnets, colon cleansing, crystal therapy or aura reading. Herbs that show promise are developed by science, not quacks. If you waited for the bugs to be ironed out of homeopathy, you’d be DEAD....Show more

Raymon Fiene: Alternative medicine usually takes a more natural approach by using herbs, vitamins, and minerals that compliment or supplement what your body needs. OTC Medicine or Prescription medicine normally takes a different approach by combining synthetic compounds with other drug "classes" (barbituates, anti-histimine, narcotic, etc) to achieve a more powerful counteraction. Alternative medicines are often derived from foods or plants, whereas most OTC and prescription medicines are manufactured. Both can be effective, depending on an accurate diagnosis o! f the issue, not just the symptoms....Show more
