Marcel Then: It depends on the version that is in use. But it will usually tell one plane to climb and the other to descend.

Sharolyn Claybourn: The TCAS will issue separate warnings (Traffic Alerts (TA) or Resolution Advisories (RA)) to each aircraft based on the geometry of the closure and the most efficient way to resolve it.I must admit that initially I thought TCAS was just one more FAA mandated item that would get in the way of flying airplanes, but after getting an RA near Van Nuys as we were maneuvering for RWY 9 at Burbank, I became a believer....
